By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this training course aims to debate the reproduction of institutional racism and the obstacles existing in policies and law for the struggle against it. The course will put in relation definitions of concepts and political vocabularies (for instance: institutional racism, ‘race’, racialisation, discrimination, segregation) with the political debates and the initiatives undertaken by governamental, educational, juridical and legislative institutions, as well as by grassroots movements and antiracist struggles.

Mainly focusing on the European and Portugues context, the different seminars will examine the following issues: i) how the rule of law and the anti-discrimination discourse silence racism; ii) the institutionalisation/denial of racism in processes of educational and housing segregation; iii) the debate on the citizenship law in Portugual; iv) the penal code and racial filtering. The course will finalise with a roundtable on two movies (the directors will be present) dealing and conversating with the experiences of racialised subjects in the context of institutional violence and racism.

This activity is organised in the context of the research project COMBAT - Combating racism in Portugal: an analysis of public policies and antidiscrimination law (funded by FCT; ref. PTDC/IVC-SOC/1209/2014 - POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016806), together with the project POLITICS - The politics of antirracism in Europe and Latin America: knowledge production, decision-making and collective struggles (funded by ERC; grant nº 725402).
